From theft to scams and even personal security risks, staying alert is essential. Here are practical tips to help you enjoy a safe and stress-free holiday shopping experience.
Plan Ahead
Before heading out, make a plan. Create a shopping list and set a budget to avoid unnecessary distractions. Choose shopping centers or districts known for good lighting, security presence, and surveillance. If possible, shop during daylight hours or in well-lit areas at night. Share your plans with a friend or family member, especially if you’ll be out late or carrying valuable items.
Stay Alert and Aware
Many shopping environments are busy, and distractions are everywhere. Keep your phone use to a minimum while walking—texting or scrolling makes you an easy target for pickpockets. Maintain situational awareness by scanning your surroundings and noting exits in stores and parking garages. If something feels off—such as someone following you or lingering near your car—trust your instincts and seek help from store security or law enforcement.
Avoid wearing headphones while walking outdoors. They reduce your ability to hear approaching vehicles or people. If you’re using rideshare services, verify the driver and vehicle details before getting in.
