The Hidden Dangers of Vaping

By Joseph Pangaro CSO

Vaping has become a widespread trend among young people, often marketed as a safer alternative to smoking. However, the reality is far more concerning. Schools and parents must understand the hidden dangers associated with vaping and the risks it poses to students’ health.

The Health Risks

Many students believe vaping is harmless, but research shows otherwise. Vape liquids often contain twice as much nicotine as traditional cigarettes, making them highly addictive. Additionally, e-cigarettes and vape pens release toxic substances such as formaldehyde, acrolein, and heavy metals, which can cause lung damage, respiratory illness, and even cardiovascular disease.

The Appeal to Young People

The variety of vape flavors—ranging from bubblegum to mint—has drawn in younger users, often starting as early as 12 years old. This targeted marketing increases the likelihood of addiction, making students lifelong consumers.

The Gateway to Drug Use

One of the most alarming trends is the use of vape pens for illicit drugs. Marijuana and opioids can be easily disguised in vape devices, allowing students to use them undetected in schools and at home. Unlike traditional smoking, vaping leaves little to no odor, making it difficult to identify substance abuse.

What Can Be Done?

Schools and parents must work together to educate students on the risks of vaping. Implementing school policies, monitoring behavior, and providing resources for nicotine addiction treatment can help combat this growing issue. Awareness is the first step toward prevention.
